HOW
DOES THE LASER WORK?
The Alexandrite EpiTouch™ Laser generates a laser light that converts
to heat upon contact with melanin (dark pigmentation). The resulting heat
energy destroys the root of the hair. As dark clothing and cars absorb
more sunlight and heat than lighter colors, darker hair absorbs more laser
light and heat than lighter colored hair. Optimum results are realized
in persons with dark hair and light skin. This laser is not effective
on gray or blond hair, which lacks melanin.

THE LASER SAFE?
Lasers have been in use for years, particularly in surgical procedures.
The laser operates in the infrared spectrum of light rather than the ultraviolet
spectrum, as does sunlight, which can cause skin damage. Although the
laser is safe for use on the surface of all body areas, as a matter of
policy, SMOOTH does not treat male clients in the area below the waist
line and above the mid-thigh.Persons with darker skin or with a suntan
are not ideal candidates for this laser treatment, as the laser may burn
darker skin.

HOW
LONG DOES A TREATMENT TAKE?
The laser has the capability of pulsing as often as five times per second;
however, in practice, we generally use two pulses per second. Each pulse
of the laser covers an area approximately the size of a dime. The length
of time for a treatment depends on the body area treated. By way of example,
a treatment of an average size male's back can be completed in approximately
an hour and a half to two hours.

HOW
MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
Dependent upon the body area treated, the color, coarseness and density
of the hair and the degree of laser energy appropriate for the client's
skin type, most clients reach their desired objective after four treatments.
Treatments should be spaced six weeks apart.

WHAT
ABOUT SCARRING OR SIDE EFFECTS?
Immediately following a treatment with the laser, clients experience a
reddening and puffiness of the skin in the treated area. The sensation
is similar to a mild sunburn. This effect disappears in a matter of hours
to a day or so. In some persons, and most often those with darker or tanned
skin, there is the possibility of hyperpigmentation, which is a dense
clustering of pigmentation giving the appearance of freckles. In some
instances, and specifically with darker skinned or tanned persons, there
is the possibility of hypopigmentation, which is a loss of skin color,
giving the appearance of white spots. Both of these conditions generally
take months to disappear.

IS
IT PERMANENT?
SMOOTH does not claim that the results of its laser hair removal process
are permanent. The Alexandrite EpiTouch™ Laser has only been in use
for several years. A study of persons treated with the prototype of this
laser states that three months after the last treatment an average of
90% of hair was absent compared to pretreatment hair count. Clients should
expect long lasting results with a small amount of regrowth per year.
There are a number of factors that determine the results a client will
realize, including hair and skin color, the area of the body treated and
the level of laser energy that is applied, as well as natural changes
in the body's hair growth patterns resulting from aging, medications,
illnesses, etc.

DOES
IT HURT?
There is discomfort associated with the procedure. It is similar to a
rubber band snapping against the skin. A topical analgesic is available
and is highly recommended, especially for those having large body areas
treated.
